Chelsea Match Review

Chelsea vs Swansea I Premier League I 28/4/2018

Match Overview

It was a tale of two halves for Chelsea at the Liberty Stadium in a match equally crucial for either side with Chelsea needing a win to close the gap for a Champions League spot next season and Swansea needing points to bring them further away from the relegation zone. Chelsea were absolutely rampant in the first half but Swansea subsequently grew into the second half and they will go home tonight feeling like they could have nicked a point or three.

In a performance where the Chelsea players were stunningly in sync in the first half, the team decimated the Swansea defence and peppered Fabianski’s goal with numerous shots. Hazard’s constant dribbling through the defence, combined with excellent link up play between Giroud and Fabregas, eventually lead to the first goal on the 3rd minute. Kante had the ball and played a quick pass to Hazard who then dribbled through the middle and in turn, brought all three Swansea defenders towards him. That left space for Fabregas on the right to ghost in and with an incisive pass, Fabregas was one-on-one with Fabianski. Without hesitation, he swept the ball to the top left corner.

Cesc Fabregas 3’

After the goal, Chelsea continued with the onslaught and had a number of chances go narrowly wide or blocked before it escalates. Hazard continues to play off Giroud and Fabregas joined in on the attack constantly, spraying beautiful passes to the wingbacks or to the front two. There was an almost own goal by Swansea and the Swansea defence had to make a couple of fairly lucky blocks to keep the ball out. In the end, Chelsea, once again, fail to kill off their opponents when they could.

Half time: 1-0

The second half was a different story though, especially after the 65th minute. Before which, Chelsea was pretty much still in control with equal chances by both sides to either extend the lead or to equalise. It could be the rain that was pouring at the Liberty Stadium or a drop in intensity. Either way, Swansea grew in confidence after each successful, albeit weak, shots on target from distance at Courtois and the game could have changed in Swansea’s favour. There were some interesting refereeing decisions throughout the match. A couple of offside decisions were not spotted or unnecessarily flagged and some fouls were seemingly unfairly judged. In the end, Chelsea may feel lucky to have gone home with 3 points, but then again, they could have easily had a more comfortable score-line by half time.

Full-time: 1-0

Match Highlight

Chelsea played with a 3-5-1-1 with Hustleman Rudiger, Mr Dependable Azpilicueta and captain Gary Cahill in the defence, the same from the Southampton game. Victor Moses and Emerson also retained their positions in Right Wingback and Left Wingback respectively. The only difference is the midfield, with Willian on the bench and Bakayoko starting alongside Wizard Fabregas and midfield destroyer N’golo Kante. Eden Hazard plays up front right behind Giroud.

This formation had been the go-to formation for Antonio Conte since the start of this season, which Conte reasoned to provide more defensive solidity than the 3-4-3. Despite the case, the Chelsea defence still looked susceptible and porous and it is a good thing Courtois was up to match for this game especially in the second half. The attack though, was phenomenal, characterised by excellent touches and tricks and when they break, it was breath-taking to behold. The substitutes, Willian, Pedro and Morata are all forward players, thus their introduction maintained the energy and fluidity of Chelsea’s attack.

Swansea

Swansea matched Chelsea in having three defenders at the back. They were absolute thrash in the first half, misplacing passes and not having the creative spark going forward but in the second, the whole team came alive. Their frustration is summed up by Ayew’s unnecessary foul on Cahill in the dying seconds of the match.

As mentioned, it was a tale of two halves, and the stats tell the story of the night. Chelsea and Swansea had almost similar possession rates (51%-49%) and equal number of shots on target (3), which is a fairly low number of shots for Chelsea (Well, we played for one half only anyway) in the Conte era against a ‘weaker’ side.

Man Of The Match

Chelsea’s MOTM should deservedly go to Hazard for his brilliant displays on the ball and influence on the match. Honestly, it seems impossible to rob the ball off Eden Hazard and he is an absolute menace when he dribbles straight through the defence at pace. He constantly looks for the space to shoot but defenders keep closing on him in numbers which he then is forced to pass to his unmarked colleagues.

Giroud deserves special mention. His flicks and passes with his head opened up and often started Chelsea’s attack. As a brilliant target man, he made the attack tick.

Player Ratings

-          Goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois               7

Plays in goal after Caballero’s cameo in the FA Cup Semi-final. Didn’t have much to do in the first half but in the second half, had to make a couple of decent but fairly easy saves. Not tested much.

-          Defenders

Gary Cahill                           6.5

Once again, the lion puts in an acceptable appreciative performance. Could have stifled the attacks more in the second half though.

Antonio Rudiger               6.5

Hustleman overall performance is as solid and pleasing to watch as it gets. Generally good in defence and had a good chance to score from a corner in the first half. However, he also could have stopped done better in the second half

Cesar Azpilicueta              6.6

I would say he played better than the game against Southampton. Made a couple of crucial blocks and often brings the ball forward. 6.6 as an appreciation for that.

-          Midfielders

Tiemoue Bakayoko          6.5

He plays too simple passes and does not contribute much going forward, except towards the end (with that tame shot across goal). Defensively, he do help to cut the passing width for Swansea but then a tree (not Fellaini) can do just that. I think his role is to disrupt and distract as Kante will then steal the ball when being occupied with Baka.

N’golo Kante                      7

Great defensively as usual, although he did commit some mistakes in this match. He seems to have a  knack for driving forward with pace now in attack and this can lead to attacking opportunities.

Cesc Fabregas                    7.5

Great interplay with the front forwards. He plays further forward than his midfield counterparts and passes his balls well (as he should). Great composed goal at the start.

-          Wingbacks

Victor Moses                     6.5

His darts in attack caused trouble, but as much of this season, he could contribute better in defence

Emerson Palmieri             7

This guy is fearless going forward, maybe even against Conte’s wishes. A particular memorable run took him dribbling from defence all the way to a shot straight at Fabianski. Alonso may find it hard to displace him.

-          Forwards

Eden Hazard                       8

Another amazing performance. Great pace, great dribbling and great passes (has his passing improved significantly?)

Olivier Giroud                    7.5

Great, if not the greatest, target man. His assets are exactly what Chelsea is lacking in the first half of this season. Came off with a standing ovation by the Chelsea supporters

-          Substitutes

Since the subs were forwards, and good players at that, the attack was still great, and they created a couple of chances on the break especially with Willian. Pedro looked a little off and Morata can’t be judged with only less than 10 minutes of play. Pity Swansea. I mean, come on, an ex-Barca player, an ex-Real Madrid player and a player as good as Willian on the bench?

The Slightly Biased Chelsea Match Review I Chelsea vs Southampton I FA Cup I 22/4/2018

The Slightly Biased Chelsea Match Review

Chelsea vs Southampton I FA Cup I 22/4/2018

Match Overview

It was an absolutely splendid game at the Wembley stadium with as much scares as joy for the Chelsea fans. Some of the Chelsea players kicked into extra gear and seemed more energetic and reactive than their previous few matches, in particular Ngolo Kante, Willian and Eden Hazard.

The first half ended with Chelsea feeling like kicking themselves in the foot after a series of good chances miss narrowly. Hazard took his chance from outside the penalty box and his shot flew just inches above the post with Southampton keeper McCarthy nowhere near the ball. Hazard’s acute pass a few minutes later saw Willian hitting another long range shot which hits the post. It almost seems like despite the huge dominance, Chelsea may be hit with a sucker punch and then fail to recover, like many of their previous matches.

Half Time: 0-0

Then came the second half and the Blues came out all-blazing. In truth, the game tempo mellowed at the start of the second half, but within a minute Olivier Giroud, the Big Friendly Giant from Arsenal, brought the Chelsea half of Wembley up in cheers with a brilliant goal courtesy of a goal line scramble. Giroud have always been a fantastic target man, and that particular characteristic is the main reason why he was bought by Chelsea. His hold up play caused the chaos in the Southampton box which offered him the sliver of a shot at goal which he duly quickly nudges in. After the goal, Chelsea seemed to drop off a little. Southampton did threaten on the few times they got the ball, powered by their fans urging them on.

1-0          Olivier Giroud 46’

In fact, Southampton did come close several times for the equaliser. At one point, an awesome Charlie Austin one-touch pass sets Shane Long on a one-on-one with Caballero but Long’s heavy touch just skews the ball over for a goalkick. In another terrible moment, Caballero almost did a howler by failing to properly grab onto a simple cross. The ball slipped from his arms and was almost bundled into the net via Austin’s back. It may actually have crossed the line, but Caballero scrambled for the ball and quickly pushed it away.

2-0          Alvaro Morata 82’

Either way, both sides were threatening on the break. That is, until the hitman from Real Madrid is introduced. In two minutes, Alvaro Morata connected from a delicious pass from deep from Cesar Azpilicueta to head home a crucial goal to create a comfortable 2-0 cushion. It has been quite some time since we saw the Dave-Morata combo and hopefully this will mark another volley of such goals!

After the goal, it was just a matter of maintaining the scoreline. Chelsea have done the job, which is expected of them (come on, its Southampton), and now we will face Manchester United in the Finals (Let’s be honest, we would much better face them than Spurs). This season can, after all, be salvaged.

Match Highlight

Chelsea played with a 3-4-3. Gary Cahill is partnered by the Hustler Rudiger and Mr Dependable Cesar Azpilicueta in defence. In Midfield, we have Kante and Fabregas. At Wingback we have Emerson and Victor Moses while our attack is spearheaded by Giroud with Hazard and Willian providing the runs behind him.

It is quite a standard Conte team shape since the start of the season and with the new addition, Olivier Giroud, the team looked more solid and impressive going forward. Giroud is able to hold the ball up well as Willian and Hazard are allowed to run off him. That caused a lot of problem to the Southampton defence and Yoshida must have had nightmares about today. Time and time again, Hazard and Willian ghosts in through the defence into dangerous positions.

The Chelsea defence, however, does not seem solid. It doesn’t feel right to blame the individual players, but there is just a lack of steel in the middle (like an Umtiti or even a MacGuire) to allay all the fears of a sucker punch. Either way, they still managed to hold on, thus kudos to them.

When Willian was hauled off, the team looks really bereft of attacking power until Pedro’s introduction. I think Bakayoko must really get his head into the game now and step up to fill those attacking shoes I know he is capable of. The transition period between the two substitutions was really scary and Chelsea looked fragile.

Southampton

Southampton did not put up much of a fight and to be honest, man to man, their players are not a match to Chelsea’s quality. They did, however, almost took their chances when they had them. Special mention should go to Charlie Austin whom I think is their standout player among teammates who deserves to play in the Championship. And our oldboy Ryan Bertrand. What a player he has turned out to be! He would give our wingbacks a run for their starting position!

In the end, the score is justifiably so with us having a significantly higher possession (57%) and almost twice more shots than them. Expect Tottenham to reverse these stats!

Man Of The Match

I think for this match, Eden Hazard deserves the Man-of-the-Match. In the first half he was absolutely God-like going forward. On a counter attack, much like Willian, he would dribble with the ball through the defence at speed and when the opportunity occurs, take a chance with a shot.

However, what is more amazing to watch is Hazard’s world class dribbling around the defence as he takes on player after player and making them look like amateurs. Willian also at times do that during the match, but Hazard was dribbling the opponent so much, I almost felt sorry for the Southampton midfield and defence. He is an absolutely stickler with his outlandish tricks. Don’t get me wrong, other players can also do the tricks he does. But Hazard does the tricks SUCCESSFULLY. His rabona cross, which Moses attempted to overhead kick in, was glorious to watch as a Chelsea fan.

Another standout player is Kante. His reactions in the match was really quick and spot on, as he is famous for. Even more surprising was his acceleration when he attempts to retrieve a lost ball or to intercept. Kante has really grown too as a player since he came to Chelsea and is an absolutely complete Midfield Destroyer. However, due to Hazard’s awesomeness, he deserves to be a close second.

Player Ratings

-          Goalkeeper

Willy Caballero                  6.5

That was an absolute howler from him. Although he wasn’t troubled much, he did misplace some balls which may get Chelsea into trouble. I rate him highly as a good shot stopper with great reaction. But this was not one of his best performances.

-          Defenders

Cesar Azpilicueta              7

Appears to have a dip in form the past couple of games. He is not too solid, although Moses can also be blamed for some mistakes on the right. Dave still a great defender with pace and vision. His assist was brilliant and a good example of this.

Gary Cahill                           6.5

Near the end of last season, I would choose Cahill as my TOTS CB. His greatest attribute is he is an absolute lion and goes into tackles without a care for his life and do make important interventions at times. But when nerves or confidence gets to him, it gets displayed quite clearly on the pitch. I don’t really see him contributing much for this match but he sure could have staved off some of the Southampton’s attack.

Rudiger                                7

Hustleman was brilliant as usual and compared to Dave and Cahill, he actually looked the most solid.

-          Midfielders

Cesc Fabregas                    6.5

What has happened to Fabregas this season? Not always known for his defensive capabilities, he actually did some successful tackles and won the ball during this match, But on the attacking note, I fear what many Chelsea fans may also fear. Cesc may have lost his magical killer pass. It may be due to Costa missing in the equation (damn, I still miss him), or he is really into his twilight years. Without his passing range and vision, wherein is Fabregas value?

Ngolo Kante                       7.5

Absolutely brilliant. 70% of the world is covered with water but Kante covers 100% of the world. He is a class midfielder. Great acceleration and tackling. Top talent and performance.

-          Wingbacks

Victor Moses                     6.5

He does offer a lot going forward, but then he allows gaps in behind that can be exploited (by Bertrand). May be bereft of creativity coming forward and may want to look to improve that

Emerson Palmieri             6.5

He was a joy to watch in the first half. He continuously tried to attack the Southampton defence whenever he had the chance. Tails off abit on the second half

-          Forwards

Olivier Giroud                    7.5

This guy is a world class talent and I cannot believe Arsenal is willing to let go of him. Sure he has no speed but without his speed, he is an absolute beast with his hold up play, heading and shooting. In other words, a true striker. Atleast France appreciates this talent.

Eden Hazard                       8

Dribbles, tricks and shots. Wow. Please don’t leave Chelsea mate

Willian                                   7.5

Came alive from time to time during the match. When he is on a break, it was absolutely thrilling to watch him

-          Substitutes

Bakayoko still seems to need more practice or gameplay or confidence. Morata was a breathe of fresh air when he came on, providing speed and width but at the same time makes Chelsea lose that dominant character to dominate in the final third. Pedro offers speed and creativity after the removal of Willian for Bakayoko. The team is better balanced with three forwards to continue to create chances.

A Poem: A Hero's Journey

A Hero’s Journey
In my room I watch the light,
The wind’s blowing out of sight,
Windows above, a view outside,
And there I wonder when is night

In my bed I watch the door,
Hearing footsteps scrap the floor,
Strangers or beasts, hands or claws,
Yet there I lay, same as before

I heaved a sigh and sat straight up,
Looked to my left and spot my cup,
Plastic and worn, I filled her up,
With water from tap covered in grub

There’s not much to do, no sight no sound,
The light from my flame’s wasting, not found,
I know my myth will ebb in this enclosure,
With nothing to do and minimal exposure

At times I thought of things from past,
Things of old that flash by fast,
It seems redundant to see them again,
What then are memories, if not the pain?

I remembered all my evil decisions,
And the one that put me in this position,
Sometimes I lament my irrationality,
To what I once thought of as “just necessity”

See, when one was allowed so much time to reflect,
With nothing to do and no one to connect,
Your mind will wander and talk to itself,
It goes in hyperdrive, excavating great wealth

A time suddenly came when it all makes sense,
Everything that had happened until present tense,
The things I saw, and the things I did,
The things that made me grow from a seed

See, I am what I am from my own experience,
The people around me created my presence,
The realisation that I am the Hero of this story,
Was the turning point that lifted me from my state of Sorry

The Hero’s story is how a person like me,
Sets out on a quest, able and free,
I reap what I sow, and I get what I seek,
In a life that is uncertain, from crest to peak

Everyone starts off the same little being,
Small and tiny, with arms all flailing,
Then came the Influences that engulf the child,
That shape who it will be through test and trial

At some point I think, the child understand,
That life is unequal but peppered with chance,
For though circumstance seems to decide one’s fate,
The Hero have some power to change their trait

That is life, and the possibilities for failure,
The uncertainty and allure for greater adventure,
The Hero must overcome all setbacks with belief,
To win the hearts of people and establish one’s myth

Suddenly one morning, I rose up so quickly
From the cold hard floor, I’d slept on so soundly,
My heart beats fast and head shook violently,
My teeth were gritted, and fists clenched tightly

What am I doing? My head screamed out,
A Hero, I am! I want to shout,
It can’t end this way I shook my head,
Please, God, help me, I silently said

One day, I heard the sound of music,
The beat and rhythm, Was it a trick?
I can’t remember how long it really has been,
Since I last heard that awful wonderful din

One day, I got hold of a plain old book,
Emotions welling up, with my hands I took,
With each page turned my mind tore the book asunder
I could hear it all; the author, his thoughts, like thunder

It was at that moment I realised the great enormity,
Of the potential of Influence to cause calamity,
For a small book, the author had created,
A myth, an idea, in my mind they mattered

Then I stopped. With darkness around, I breathed in deeply.

There’s not much to do, no sight no sound,
The light from my flame’s wasting, not found,
I know my myth will ebb in this enclosure,
With nothing to do and minimal exposure\

For the Hero’s Journey, the Hero must be free,
To create his myth, his legend, his story
So in the end, everyone will know,
His thoughts, his vision the mystic ‘Hero’

In my room I watched the light,
The wind’s blowing out of sight,
Windows above, a view outside,
And there I wonder… when is bright

4 Things to Do In NTU (Nanyang Technological University): A Campus Survival Guide

Nanyang Technological University, or NTU as it is more commonly referred to as, is located at the West side of Singapore in the region of Boon Lay and is one of the leading universities in the world. The campus covers an expansive area such that several chartered buses (called the Red, Green and Blue buses) run daily every day to offer commute to the students staying or going around NTU. It may take 20mins to get from one end of NTU to the other. That said, NTU are sometimes affectionately referred to as Pulau NTU.

Another reason why it is called Pulau NTU, or NTU island in English, is the fact that one may literally live in the campus without having the need to leave it. The campus houses numerous Hall Residences, numbered from 1 - 23 (as of 2018), at frankly quite affordable rates (around an average of SGD$300/ month). Each Hall will have a canteen situated nearby for their daily meals. At the major points of studying avenues, called North Spine and South Spine, there are fast-food restaurants such as McDonalds, Long John Silver, KFC, Subway and PizzaHut and restaurants such as PenInc.There is also supermarkets for one to shop their daily groceries, namely at North Spine called Prime Supermarket and at Canteen 2 called Giant Supermarket. Thus, for a student living on campus the basic needs for survival can be taken care of. The question now thus, is what activities can be done to enrich and stimulate your mind and body in NTU? This is a list of casual suggestions which I hope might be useful for you who wants to know what can be done in NTU to fill your time, if you have no plans to travel out of NTU.

1) Join a student club or hall activity
Of course, if one really intends to make their time worthwhile for a cause or to learn something interesting, they can join one of a plethora of clubs and sports offered by the school and the respective halls. This range from volunteering, dancing, performing, sports, cultural clubs and even board game clubs. There is really so many options for one to join. For a full list: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/CampusLife/Clubs/Pages/StudentsUnionClubs.aspx . This list does not include Hall activities. The respective halls offer more activities for one to join with the aim to enrich the lives of their residences and they are organized by each hall's appointed committees. Thus, each Halls have their own sports, games and events organised. Furthermore, in around December, all the Halls would compete in the Inter-Hall Games (IHG) in several sports and intellectual games (such as chess).
For me, in Year 1, I took part in Table Tennis and Hall Production (drama) in Crescent Hall (after dropping Darts, Pool and Soccer) and was PnP Director for NTU's Linguistics club. It was a hectic year XD. In Year 2, I shifted hall and is now in the Dinner and Dance committee for Tamarind Hall and I also volunteer for the Deaf Society and is part of the upcoming LMS camp and SOH camp.

2) Keeping fit
It is always important to keep fit. I find having a fit body also relates to a fit mind and having good habits, so where can one go to keep fit on their own spare time?
Gym
Each respective Halls should have a gym in their hall or nearby. The newer halls such as Binjai, Banyan, Tanjong, Tamarind, Crescent and Pioneer Halls all have their own gyms. I do know Hall 1 has a small gym, as I have been there. Either way, one can also go to the Student Recreational Centre (SRC) located behind Hall 6, Pioneer and Crescent Hall which is the main place where NTU sports club go to meet. The SRC actually has three gyms and I find them having less traffic than the Hall gyms. One of the gym, however, is reserved for NTU athletes representing NTU in competitions. These gyms are free to use for students and staff of NTU.
Running
There is a running track circling around NTU which is marked by its blue rubber track. The track has several routes one may choose to take ranging from 1.6km to 7km. A full list of them can be found here: http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/healthylifestyle/ntu_road_map.swf . Also, one can also run at the SRC where there is a stadium with a running track for one to use.
Swimming
At the SRC, there is a swimming complex consisting of a child pool, adult pool and a diving pool. The diving pool with it 3m and 5m diving platform is open to the public on Wednesdays 6-7pm.
Other Sports
For organised sports such as Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Squash, Soccer and Basketball, one can book the required facility, for free, here: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/has/SnR/SportsFacilities/Pages/BookingofFacilities.aspx . Rackets, balls etc are not provided, so you will have to bring them yourselves. Some of the places one can play the sports are, the respective Halls, the SRC (there are 4 courts to play street soccer) and Tanjong, Binjai Hall cluster.
You can usually find me running or gymming on Mondays and Wednesdays at my Hall, SRC or Route 2 or 8 of the NTU running track ;)

3) Leisure Games
What if you just want to chill, play some games or just hang around? You can do just that at non other than the Student Activities Centre located at North Spine. Its precise location is next to One-Stop (a crucial place to know for NTU students as this is where all our administrative needs are done) and a printing shop and below the huge Lee Wee Nam library. Here, one can play Table Tennis, Pool or snooker, foosball, board games and the game consoles (Wii, XBOX, PS) located there. However, there is a small hourly fee for the game consoles and a limited number of games offered.
There are several Darts machines located at Canteen 2 charging only SGD$1 for a game.
And if you want to just chill and watch a movie, there are actually 'movie pods' which can accommodate up to four people located at the Library Outpost at the Hive at South Spine. There, you can borrow a DVD from a pretty wide collection, book a movie pod for free and just sit and watch the movie.
For the avid book reader, there are also pretty nice spots to sit and chill around campus. The libraries often have cosy spots to read in an air-conditioned environment (as we all know how the heat may get to you in Singapore!). I would recommend the Library Outpost, as they have cosy bean bags to lie on. The Humanities and Social Science Library located at South Spine also offers interesting books on their shelves.
I used to play a lot of Darts with some friends in Year 1 at Canteen 2, thus, I would recommend that place. Other than that, reading is a pretty nice thing to do too in my free time in NTU.

4) Drinks & Such
I am no expert on this subject, but this may be of interest to others. In Singapore, there is a ban on sale of alcohol from 10.30pm - 7am (due to a recent event in Little India). If you wish to buy alcohol drinks from a store, you can do so at PRIME and Giant supermarket as mentioned above or at the 7 11 store located at Canteen 2. This ban does not include restaurants and bars thus you can still buy them at Pen & Inc. There are some beer brewing clubs at Binjai called Binjai Breweries (although they may be closing down soon) and another at Crescent Hall. Of course, for student residents many do store their alcoholic drinks and from time to time would celebrate with their hall residents and friends.
I used to drink and club quite a bit in Year 1. I think for those new to Singapore, it is important to note that the price of alcohol here, due to a high alcohol tax, is really high. Someone from France once told me the cost of the same alcohol can cost $1-2 there but $8 in Singapore.

Thus are just some suggestions on things to do on your own or with a group of friends if you are staying or intending to stay in Pulau NTU. I hope this short guide is useful and give you some ideas on life here. There are of course more activities which I may have missed or only skimmed upon which I myself have not tried my hands on. The point of this post is, there are really so many things to occupy your time with in NTU and I hope those who are studying here can appreciate and enjoy every moment of their time here.:)

With Regards,
Wan
